Sophomore Seminar Course

All BCSD Student are required to take Sophomore Seminar course. In addition to providing academic support for sophomore students, this full year course students will explore college and career planning, pathways, and preparation aligned with the Portrait of a Graduate attributes. Through engaging discussions and authentic real-world experiences, students will identify their interest, research college and career options, and connect those discoveries to relevant high school courses and experiences. Students will develop a personalized plan, discover skills needed for future success, and learn how their academic choices directly shape post-secondary opportunities. This seminar will guide students to make informed decisions, understand college and career pathways and set achievable goals for college, technical training, or the workforce. Students will leave the course equipped with interpersonal and intellectual skills needed to thrive in an interconnected, ever-changing world.

Course content will focus on the following areas:

  • College and career goal setting and strategic short- and long-term planning
  • Resume building and interview preparation
  • Creating connections within the Brockport community

Additionally, students will take the ACT WorkKeys assessment to earn industry-recognized workplace credentials while identifying individual growth areas. Through hands-on experiences, students will develop professional skills by participating in mock interviews, writing cover letters, and engaging in AI literacy workshops. Students will also create resumes and ePortfolio websites to showcase their skills and career readiness.

Credentials and Badges earned: ACT WorkKeys, Digital Literacy, Professional Communication, AI literacy, Career Bages, Out of School Micro-Credentials. Jobs, sports, volunteering, and hobbies can also be credentialed.
