NYSED Portrait of a Graduate
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) developed the Portrait of a Graduate to describe the skills and abilities students should have when they finish high school. It focuses not only on academic knowledge, but also on the real-world skills students need for college, careers, and life.
The Portrait of a Graduate describes the kind of learner New York schools are working to develop. It means that by graduation, students should be prepared to succeed in school, work, and their communities.
A New York graduate should be able to:
Think and Solve Problems
Students learn how to analyze information, ask questions, and find solutions to real-world challenges.
Communicate Clearly
Students practice sharing ideas through speaking, writing, listening, and digital communication.
Work Well With Others
Students collaborate with classmates, respect different perspectives, and contribute positively to teams.
Be Responsible and Self-Directed
Students set goals, manage their time, and take ownership of their learning.
Be Ready for College and Careers
Students gain the knowledge and practical skills needed for the next step after high school, whether that is college, a career, or specialized training.
Be Active and Engaged Citizens
Students understand their role in their community and learn how to make a positive impact.
In Short
The Portrait of a Graduate helps ensure that students graduate not only with strong academic knowledge, but also with the skills, character, and confidence needed to succeed in the real world.

Under Portrait of a Graduate, Diploma requirements will be changing change for high school students over the next few years?
The chart below details how diploma requirements would change for cohorts of students if the applicable changes are approved by the Board of Regents. A cohort consists of all students who first entered grade 9 in a particular school year. For example, the 2023 Cohort includes all of the students who started grade 9 in the 2023-2024 school year. If these students were to follow a traditional trajectory, they would graduate in June 2027.
