NEW YORK STATE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

In New York State, students earn a high school diploma by completing a minimum of 22 credit requirements and assessment/pathway requirements.

 

High School Graduation in NewYork State: A Guide for Families

Graduating from high school in New York State means completing required courses and passing certain assessments, as set by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). These requirements ensure students are prepared for college, careers, and life after high school.

There are several diploma options – including a local diploma, a Regents diploma, or a Regents diploma with advanced designation – depending on your student’s coursework and assessments.

Tip for families: Credits are earned by successfully completing courses (for example, English 9–12, Social Studies sequences, Math, Science, PE, Health, and electives).

22 Credits (Coursework) required:

English: 4 credits
Math: 3 credits (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II)
Science: 3 credits (1 life science, 1 physical science)
Social Studies: 4 credits
Health: 0.5 credit
Art or Music: 1 credit
Physical Education: 2 credits
Electives: 3.5 credits

Regents Exams Required:

1 ELA (English 11)

1 Math (Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II)
1 Science (Earth, Living Environment, Chemistry, or Physics)
1 Social Studies (Global or US History)
1 Additional assessment OR Pathway option

Advanced Designation Diploma Requirements : 

Pass 3 math Regents + 2 science Regents + complete World Language Level 3

OR

5-unit sequence in CTE/Art/Music + additional requirements
