BHS Launches One School, One Book Initiative for 2023-2024 Year
Brockport High School is once again participating in a One School, One Book initiative. This year, all students in grades 9-12 will be reading and discussing For Every One by Jason Reynolds. For Every One is a series of poems for the young dreamers of the world. Reynolds originally wrote these poems as letters to himself over a three-year period, while he struggled as a writer in NYC. The series of poems was eventually performed at the Kennedy Center for the unveiling of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. The poem discusses the difficulty of facing struggles and the importance of perseverance and passion when it comes to pursuing your dreams. The initiative was kicked off with a short introductory video from Reynolds who will be later joining BHS for a virtual visit on November 16th. Over the next few weeks students will engage with the text through all areas of the curriculum. There will also be opportunities to participate in book discussions on his additional works. The goal of the initiative is to not only engage our school in a shared reading, but also to foster community connections and to embrace the power of literacy.
