New Visions is a one-year career exploration program that provides highly motivated seniors with the opportunity to gain valuable insights into Health Science career options from a real-world perspective. Area businesses, colleges, health care and government facilities provide the setting for immersed learning in health careers including therapeutic services and diagnostic services.

Grow Your Skills in Agriculture-Related Fields
Students will be introduced to career pathways in agriculture, with a focus on processing, marketing, distribution, and development of products and resources. Opportunities include preparation for careers working outdoors, around livestock, and with high tech equipment. Students will engage in a variety of agricultural activities at a local farm to explore plant science, horticulture, farm livestock and conservation.

Students learn the fundamentals of residential carpentry and participate in the construction of a new house on-site. Experience is gained in wall, ceiling and roof framing, exterior finishing, trimming, windows and doors, insulation, and floor systems.

Teachers
Kyle Canfield joined the faculty at WEMOCO in 2015. Previously he taught carpentry at another BOCES, and prior to that he was employed as a union carpenter. Kyle holds an associate's degree in building trades, and he earned a New York State professional certification in carpentry education. He is an authorized OSHA Training Instructor.
Pete Sharpe earned a professional teaching certification and joined the faculty at WEMOCO in 2009. His experience includes working in the construction industry for 21 years as a business owner, in sales, and in service. He is active in town government and is an assistant coach in the SUNY Brockport baseball program.

Water and Climate Control Systems are in Every Building
In the first year, students learn the fundamentals of residential plumbing and heating installation. They will read blueprints and schematics while learning to fit, assemble, and prepare piping. The second year focuses on HVAC: installing residential and commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.

Jenna Roberge-Karns is a passionate teacher who has been working with children and teaching since 2010. Previously, she served as a disability coordinator for the Department of Labor. She worked to transition “at-risk-youth” from their residential setting to life after their CTE program. Jenna has learned a great deal from the many professionals that she has collaborated with both in the social work field as well as the teaching/CTE field, allowing her to bring a breadth of knowledge to her program.

The Hidden Profession that Saves Lives
In Medical Laboratory Assisting & Phlebotomy, students earn multiple industry recognized certifications and explore laboratory science careers. In the first year, students learn basic laboratory skills, prepare for working in the medical field, and complete coursework necessary to earn Phlebotomy Technician certification (CPT). The students complete their CPT by unpaid co-ops with local laboratories. Also in the first year, the students study human anatomy and physiology. In year two, coursework is completed to earn certification as a Certified Medical Laboratory Assistants (CMLA). Students participate in a minimum of 120 hours in external laboratory internships such as working in a lab, working as a phlebotomist, and working on the customer service side of the lab. Transferable laboratory skills are used to perform basic biotechnological skills while learning content related to genetics, genetic testing and gene therapy. Students also earn American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid certification.

Improving the Quality of Life for Patients
Students learn the fundamentals of patient care necessary for entry-level employment in healthcare facilities such as nursing homes, hospitals, medical offices and home healthcare. They gain the skills to provide physical and emotional care for patients unable to independently care for themselves. The program offers both classroom and lab settings to learn applicable skills and theory. Students participate in role-play activities as patients and caregivers with their fellow classmates. They work directly with patients as part of their clinical assignments, providing personal/hygiene care in a nursing home setting. Students who complete the New York State required classroom and clinical hours are eligible for the New York State Certified Nurse Assistant licensing exam.

Students plan and prepare baked goods: breads, pizza, rolls, cakes, cookies and pastries. Students use culinary equipment and learn proper food handling procedures. Thomas Noto worked in the baking and restaurant field prior to joining the CTE staff in 2006. He is an Oswego College graduate with a professional career and technical education degree. Lisa Doran has been a cosmetologist for more than thirty years. She attended a career and technical school for training while in high school and worked in the cosmetology field since high school. She was a teacher at a private cosmetology school before coming to WEMOCO.
Felicia Robinson has been in the beauty industry for over three decades. She began her career as a student in a BOCES program and from there she went on to work for 15 years, eventually owning a salon for 7 years. After completing her bachelor’s degree in education, she began her career as an educator at WEMOCO in 1997.
Marisa Mantisi has been working in the beauty industry since 2013. She attended school to obtain New York State Licenses in nails, waxing, cosmetology, and barbering. After completing her teaching certification she began her career as a cosmetology instructor in 2019. In addition to teaching Marisa also uses her skills behind the chair.

Product Development from Concept to Consumer
Students gain a global understanding of precision machining, the process of removing metal to create extremely accurate parts. They learn all aspects of the advanced manufacturing industry, including how to operate CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) lathes, mills and power saws. The creation of blueprints and designs using industry-driven software and technology is covered, as is performing quality control and inspections. Students will also be exposed to basic welding.

Create in Metal by Electricity and Fire Fusion
Students gain knowledge in a variety of metal joining and cutting processes including, but not limited to GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, and OFC. The program provides instruction in advanced blueprint reading and weld symbols. Various types of design processes and industry-driven software and technology are introduced. Students become familiar with American Welding Society (AWS) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards. Upon program completion, students will have the confidence to perform necessary welds according to AWS standards, have an understanding of the design and production processes of the manufacturing and fabrication industries, and be able to inspect their own work according to various codes. In year two, students can select an area of welding specialization.

With an associate’s degree in welding, Josh brings more than 10 years’ experience in the welding field to his teaching position. His past work included heavy fabrication, construction, and highly cosmetic bench work. Josh is active within his community and sits on the American Welding Society board and represents his CTE program as the Student Liaison, as well as Vice Chair.
Scott started welding in 1993 and has been a pipe welder for most of his career. He traveled throughout the United States, working on projects including steam lines, pipelines, compressor stations, and pressure vessels. He is an American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector, and a Level ll Inspector for the American Society for Nondestructive Testing.

David Shalke earned an associate degree in occupational studies in automotive service and a bachelor of science in vocational-technical education. He has worked in the automotive industry as a Ford Certified Senior Master Technician, assistant service manager, service manager and store manager. David also worked in high tech automotive equipment sales and training. Since 1984 he has been an ASE Certified Master Technician.

Powersports Are Everywhere - Become an Expert!
Students learn how to maintain, improve, diagnose/troubleshoot, and repair two- and four-stroke powered machines. The theory behind carburetion, fuel injection, direct injection, ignition, electrical, cooling, two- and four-stroke engines, and drive systems are all covered in the program.
